Eugenia the Court
Jester
This was a character from the play "pHrks".
This production was part of the New Works Project at the Mark Taper Forum
in Los Angeles.
Eugenia was a 17cc court jester in the
court of King Phillip of Spain. She is featured in the Velazquez painting
"Las Meninas".
Eugenia is wearing a ¨Mantua¨,
a popular garment from that historical period. It is made of cotton Brocade
upholstery fabric. Prior to the Industrial Revolution there was no distinction
made between the types and uses for textiles.
Hence the fabric used for living room
curtains could just as easily been used to make a wedding dress.
Scarlett O´Hara was not the first one to have that idea! |
